THE INTERFLORA STORY
Welcome to the website of Fleurop-Interflora España, an organisation which, since it began, has been devoted to transmitting good wishes and feelings with flowers and plants.
The idea of sending flowers from one town to another was started in the United States in 1892, when J. A. Valentine assumed the responsibility of developing the project he had had in his head for several years. J.A. Valentine pioneered the sending of flowers, establishing a foundation that would guarantee the service and its correct operation. The first organisation was created in 1910 under the name of Florist´s Telegraph Delivery Association (F.T.D.), an abbreviation that still exists today.
In 1908, the Berliner Max Hubern laid the foundations in Germany for the creation of a similar service in Europe, giving rise to the creation of Fleurop.
Similarly, in 1924, the British florists founded their own association for the sending of flowers and plants from one country to another within their area of influence. This gave rise to the British Unit.
In 1946, the three large groups that had formed at the beginning of the century finally got together under the common name of "INTERFLORA", which currently comprises more than 50,000 florists in 150 countries on all five continents.
That same year and also as a common denominator for all international deliveries, the INTERFLORA currency was created. It was given the name of "Fleurin" and its current value is similar to that of the euro; however, in the beginning, its value was similar to that of a Swiss franc owing to the country's neutrality. In any case, the "Fleurin" currency is a fictitious currency used to make international transactions and no actual money exists in coin or paper format.
In Spain, the first florists to form part of this organisation on an individual level appeared in 1927; however, INTERFLORA España was not officially incorporated until 1951.
The INTERFLORA logo is the Roman god Mercury or the Greek god Hermes, in short, the messenger of the gods, carrying a bouquet of flowers as a symbol of the service always provided by the professional florists associated with our company and also a symbol of our slogan: "Say it with flowers".
The fact that Interflora is present all over the world might lead to it being taken as a multinational, with franchised shops, but nothing could be further from the truth.
The true definition of INTERFLORA is that of a macro-federation made up of three large business groups with different legal personalities: F.T.D., FLEUROP and BRITISH UNIT.
